History

  • 1988- The idea of a small public aquarium on Aguda´s beach is presented by Prof. Dr. Mike Weber of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences "Abel Salazar" (ICBAS) of the University of Porto to the Mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Mr. Coronel Pinto Simões. 

 

  • 1990/91- The project is converted into the Littoral Station of Aguda ELA, designed by Porto´s architect João Paulo Peixoto in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Mike Weber.

 

  • 1992- The General Direction of Ports in Lisbon authorises the project under the condition that the Municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia is hold responsible for the protection of the building, because Aguda's beach is considered a zone of erosion risk.

 

  • 1993- The construction of the building starts.

 

  • 1996- The first aquarium tanks are installed in the building.

 

  • 1997- The agreement concerning ELA´s utilisation is officially signed by the Mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Mr. Heitor Carvalheiras, and the Institute of Biomedical Sciences "Abel Salazar", represented by Prof. Dr. Corália Vicente, Prof. Dr. Nuno Grande and Prof. Dr. Luís Baldaia, in the presence of the Magnificent Rector of the University of Porto, Prof. Dr. Alberto Amaral.

 

      •  As an initiative of the Municipal Director of Environment and Tourism Dr. Lício Correia, the articles of the Foundation ELA are proposed and approved by the Municipal Board and Assembly.
      • The First Administration Board is constituted by its President, Dr. Lício Correia, the Municipal Director of Culture, Dr. Francisco Barbosa da Costa, and the Director of the Littoral Station of Aguda, Prof. Dr. Mike Weber.
      • On the 21st of November, the Station is officially inaugurated but technical installations still continue.

 

  • 1998- The decoration of the Aquarium and the Fishery Museum is initiated.
      •  The articles of the Foundation ELA are documented.
      •  The Mayor of Vila Nova de Gaia, Dr. Filipe Menezes nominates the Second Administration Board which is constituted by its President and Municipal Director of Environment, Dr. Delfim Sousa, the Municipal Director of Culture and Education, Dr. Francisco Barbosa da Costa, and Prof. Dr. Mike Weber.

 

  • 1999- Theoretical and practical lessons are delivered, as part of the Aquatic Environmental Sciences Course of ICBAS (Institute of Biomedical Sciences of University of Porto - Marine Ecology and Fishery Technology), in the Station. 

 

      •  On the 1st of July, the Littoral Station of Aguda finally opens to the public, receiving 10.000 visitors in the first seventy days. 

 

  • 2000- A replica of one of the first fishing boats of Aguda is installed in front of the building.

 

  • 2002 - The Third Administration Board is constituted by its President and Municipal Director of Environment, Prof. Dr. Joaquim Poças Martins, the Municipal Director of Tourism, Mr. António Barbosa, and Prof. Dr. Mike Weber.

 

  • 2004- On the 1st of July, the 5th anniversary of ELA´s final inauguration is celebrated, and 150.000 visitors are registered.

 

      • The Municipal Director of Environment, Firmino Pereira is nominated for President of the Administration Board.
      • ELA is classified as the best portuguese zoo.

 

  • 10/2005 - The Fifth Administration Board is constituted by its President and Municipal Director of Environment, Mr. Mário Fontemanha, Mr. António Barbosa and Prof. Dr. Mike Weber.

 

  • 2008 - CMG gives the gold medal of cultural and scientific merit to the Director of ELA, Prof. Dr. Mike Weber, for the remarkable service to the fishing community of Aguda.

 

  • 2009 - The 10th anniversary of the Station is celebrated on the 1st of July.

 

  • 02/2010 - The Sixth Administration Board is constituted by its President and Municipal Director of Environment, Eng. Mercês Ferreira, Dr. Mário Fontemanha and Prof. Dr. Mike Weber.

 

  • 2013 - CMG extinguishes the Foundation ELA and the Littoral Station integrates the municipal company ÁGUAS DE GAIA, EM., SA.

 

  • 2014 - The 15th anniversary of the Station is celebrated on the 1st of july.

 

  • 2015 - At the end of the year, ELA reaches a total of 350.000 visitors.
